This series explores patterns in human experience, drawing parallels to inherited culture, land and tradition with centuries-old scapes and design. Motion is a common element used to demonstrate external forces that cause struggle.

PATTERNS & MOTION

Breezy Baby is about the traditions and expectations desi women are expected to uphold - particularly the pressure of marriage, childbearing and legacy. This piece demonstrates this as an external force through motion, like wind. But there is also a stillness and sense of space that bodies the boundless love that is everpresent. It is this love that I find freedom in. Even when weighed down by forces that make us small, there is room to escape - whether it is in the presence of another or in a moment of transition. I believe this force is what helps create unity and foster shared identity.

Stressed takes a more introspective perspective. It also uses motion to represent external factors that contribute to struggle. The layering bodies with purple hands and feet push this further by creating a sense of quiet turmoil. The immigrant experience warrants overworking in the name of survival, the consequences of such are familiar to immigrant families worldwide - neglecting things like health and buried desires. This impact is inherited by future generations with expectations to overcome and attain success reflected in financial stability and social status. Overworking affects the whole self and this piece depicts the physical and mental ramifications. The overlapping bodies affect the focus, the turned heads and closed eyes refuse to acknowledge the problem and the purple hands and feet are bruised and numb from pushing to continue. The struggle isn’t dramatic or extreme, it is repressed and ignored. The swirling patterns that move into the painting from the left introduces a different type of movement from the linework and brushstrokes presented on the right. It represents the temporality of struggle and how time and effort will bring opportunity and new experiences. All of these elements come together to encompass the resilience of the individual against an unforgiving world.
